Two villages that are different in scale but share a rural Hertfordshire character. Wheathampstead is the larger, with a proper village centre on the River Lea, good pubs, a butcher, a deli, and a strong community identity. Sandridge is smaller and quieter, tucked between St Albans and Wheathampstead with less of its own centre. Both have attractive period housing alongside some 20th-century development. Schools in Wheathampstead are popular. Neither has a station so you are reliant on driving, but the lanes and countryside around here are genuinely beautiful. It is the kind of place people move to when they want village life but still need to be within reach of London.
