Hindhead was transformed when the A3 tunnel opened in 2011 and took the traffic out of the village. The Devil's Punchbowl, which was basically a roundabout for decades, is now properly accessible and the National Trust has reclaimed the old road. The village itself is small with limited shops, sitting high up on the greensand ridge. Beacon Hill is the residential area spreading south, with a mix of 1920s and 1930s houses among pine and birch trees. The air up here genuinely feels different from the valley. It's not a place with a strong high street or social scene, but if you want to live surrounded by heathland and woodland it's hard to find better in Surrey.
