West Wycombe is one of the most distinctive villages in the Chilterns. The entire high street is owned by the National Trust, with a row of period buildings barely changed in centuries. The Hellfire Caves and the church with the golden ball on the hill are proper landmarks. It's tiny and there's no real shopping to speak of, but the atmosphere is unique. Lane End is a separate, larger village further west with a more workaday feel, a pub or two, and housing that ranges from period cottages to modern estates. Both are car-dependent.
