Cottenham is a large fen-edge village with a proper High Street that still has a Co-op, a butcher, a few pubs, and a fish and chip shop. It's one of the bigger villages in the cluster and has enough going on that you don't need to go into Cambridge for every little thing. The housing mix runs from older cottages around the centre to 1960s and newer estates on the fringes. The primary school has a good reputation. It's flat, open countryside in every direction, which is either beautiful or bleak depending on your taste. No rail station, so you're driving or cycling into Cambridge.
