London Colney sits at the junction of the A414 and Watling Street and has always been a through-route settlement. The old village centre around the High Street has some character, but the retail park on the A414 (with Sainsbury's, M&S, and the outlet centre) is what most people associate with it. Housing is mixed: some older stock near the village core, a lot of 1960s and 70s estates, and newer developments filling in the gaps. It is not particularly attractive, but it is practical. You get more house for your money than in St Albans proper, and the road links are good. The Colne valley and Broad Colney Lakes nature reserve offer some green relief. Napsbury Park, the converted Victorian asylum, brought a wave of higher-end housing to the northern edge.
