New Romney was once a Cinque Port but the sea retreated centuries ago, leaving the town about a mile inland. The high street has the basics, a few pubs, a Co-op, a fish and chip shop, but you would go to Ashford or Folkestone for anything more. Littlestone-on-Sea is the beach end of town, with a long shingle strand and some slightly tired seaside housing. The primary school is fine, secondary means a bus to Brockhill in Hythe. House prices are low for Kent, which is the main draw. It is quiet, and in winter it can feel properly bleak with the wind coming off the Channel across the flat marsh.
