Romney Marsh proper is flat, open, and like nowhere else in southeast England. Sheep outnumber people. The scattered settlements of St Mary in the Marsh, Ivychurch, and Old Romney are tiny, with maybe a church and a pub between them. Dungeness at the southern tip is extraordinary, a vast shingle headland with a nuclear power station, Derek Jarman's cottage garden, and a scattering of converted railway carriages and fisherman's huts. You absolutely need a car for everything. It attracts artists, birdwatchers, and people who want to be left alone.
