The town centre runs along a single high street with a decent mix of independent shops, a couple of proper pubs, and places to eat. The housing is a mix of older period properties near the centre and newer estates on the edges, particularly towards the Harlow side. The River Stort towpath is genuinely well used for walking and cycling. Families like it because it feels contained and safe, with Fawbert and Barnard's infant school rated Outstanding. The station is on the West Anglia line into Liverpool Street, which keeps it connected without turning it into another commuter dormitory. The trade-off is that it is small. Once you have done the high street, that is it. Bigger shops, restaurants, and secondary schools mostly mean a trip to Bishop's Stortford.
