Shadwell sits between Whitechapel and the river, around the Shadwell Basin and the old docks. It has always been one of the more diverse parts of an already diverse borough, with a large Bangladeshi and Somali population. The Overground and DLR both stop here, and Shadwell Basin has been turned into a watersports centre. Housing is predominantly council estates and post-war blocks, with some newer development around the basin. The high street is functional rather than appealing, mainly convenience shops and takeaways. It is honest, affordable, and central.
