Whitechapel is the commercial heart of Tower Hamlets. The road itself is one long stretch of market stalls, shops, restaurants, and the Royal London Hospital. The Elizabeth line has transformed the station into a major interchange. The area has been predominantly Bangladeshi for decades and that shapes the food, shops, and street life. Housing is mostly council estates and converted older buildings, with some new development near the station. It is noisy, crowded, and not to everyone's taste, but it is one of the most alive high streets in London. The Whitechapel Gallery anchors the western end.
