Wixams is a purpose-built new town on the old Elstow Storage Depot site, south of Bedford. It started going up around 2008 and is still being built out. The housing is almost entirely new-build detached and semi-detached from the big housebuilders, so everything looks neat and uniform but it does have that slightly identikit estate feel. Young families are the core demographic, drawn by the relatively affordable family houses and the new schools. There is a small village centre with a convenience store and a community hall, but for any proper shopping or eating out you are driving to Bedford or the retail parks. A railway station has been promised for years but keeps getting delayed, so for now it is car-dependent with bus links into Bedford town centre.
